Dental bridges are a fixed prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth. Bridges offer a number of benefits to an individual who has one or several teeth missing. They can restore the appearance of a smile and overall face shape, and can also improve function of chewing and speaking in a normal way, similar to before the tooth was lost, it helps to hold the adjacent teeth in place and prevents them from moving to fill the gap in the jaw because of the missing tooth.
There are different types of dental bridges and they come in variety of materials: gold, zirconia, metal with bonded porcelain, E-max.
The procedure involves reshaping the teeth that are going to hold bridge, to prepare them for placement of crowns, taking an impression. Once the bridge is produced by the dental laboratory, it can be placed over the gaps and crowns, and is then cemented with dental cement.
Types of bridges:
Traditional fixed bridge: two crowns on adjacent teeth to hold the bridge in place.
Cantilever bridge: one crown on adjacent tooth and no crown on the other side of the bridge
Maryland bridge: resin bonded bridge made of porcelain fused to metal teeth and framework.
Dental bridges can last for around 10-20 years, with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
