Onlays and inlays are dental restorations used to repair moderately damaged or decayed teeth when a traditional filling may not suffice. They come in different range of materials: Composite, E-max, Zirconia and Gold. They are custom-made in a dental laboratory. They are more conservative than crowns because less tooth structure of the tooth is removed during preparation. Onlay and inlays are bonded to the tooth.

Procedure is done within 2 visits: On the first visit the dentist removes the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth and takes an impression. A temporary filling may be placed while the onlay or inlay is being fabricated.

Once ready, on the second visit, the permanent restoration is bonded to the tooth surface, ensuring a precise fit and natural appearance.

Difference between Composite and E.max/ Zirconium/ Gold:

  • Composite Onlays/Inlays: Made from tooth-coloured composite resin, they are directly fabricated and bonded to the tooth in a single visit. They offer aesthetic benefits and can be easily repaired if damaged.

  • E.max/ Zirconia Onlays/Inlays: Made from lithium disilicate ceramic, they are fabricated in a dental lab for superior strength and durability. E.max restorations are highly aesthetic, mimicking natural teeth with translucent properties, and are ideal for visible areas of the mouth.

Zirconia is very strong material. Not suitable if tooth has a questionable prognosis.

  • Gold Inlays/ Onlays: Are known for their longevity and can last up to 40 years! Very durable but lacking on aesthetics due to visibility of the colour in the mouth.
